Join us for a Botanical Illustration Workshop at Dune Harbor Park!

Slow down, look closely, and discover the beauty of the natural world through art as we explore the basics of botanical illustration. This hands-on program combines nature observation, creativity, and curiosity, offering participants a chance to connect with local landscapes in a unique and meaningful way.

Together, we’ll venture along nearby trails and habitat areas, taking time to observe native plants, flowers, leaves, seeds, and other seasonal treasures. Along the way, we’ll learn how botanical illustration has been used for centuries by artists, scientists, and naturalists to study, document, and better understand the living world around us.

Using simple drawing techniques, we’ll practice observing shapes, textures, patterns, and details that are often overlooked during a typical walk outdoors. Rather than focusing on creating a perfect piece of art, this program encourages participants to slow down, pay attention, and develop a deeper appreciation for the incredible diversity of plants found in our parks and natural areas.

No artistic experience is necessary! Whether you’re an experienced artist, a casual doodler, or someone who hasn’t picked up a pencil in years, this program is designed for all skill levels. We’ll provide guidance and inspiration throughout the activity, making it easy for everyone to participate and enjoy the experience.

Drawing materials and clipboards for the botanical illustration workshop will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks, pencils, watercolors, or favorite art supplies if they prefer.

We will meet at the Lincoln Lot before exploring nearby habitats for inspiration. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for a short walk on natural-surface trails. Be sure to bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection.

Come explore, create, and experience nature through a new lens as we combine art and observation in this relaxing outdoor adventure!
